Starting a home garden is the dream of every man and woman - when you think about it! We are so busy caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we rarely think of growing our own patch of nature at home. But each time we see someone doing that - either in real life or on the TV, we are overtaken by the urge to get a home garden up and running.
Depending on the amount of space we have at home - and no, not having space is not an excuse - we can choose whether we’d like to grow vegetables (and save money for the household), fruits, flowers, or other kinds of plants - ornamental, bonsai, herbs, rare plants, hybrids, etc. Then you can choose whether you’d like to grow them in the earth directly (suitable for places with favorable climate) or inside a greenhouse. While some kinds of gardens renew themselves year on year and require minimal maintenance, some others require back-breaking labor, but are well worth the effort.
Here are a few home gardening tips that can help you get the most out of the time you spend on this wonderful hobby -
- Choose your plants well. Get expert advice on the type of soil and climatic conditions you have in your region and see which plants will thrive in those conditions. This will ensure maximum results with minimum efforts.
- Wherever possible, try to grow your plants right from the seed phase. Bringing in germinated crops and transplanting into your garden might lead to the plant not being able to adjust to the change and wilting away. A plant that germinates in your home garden will always be stronger and will yield more.
- A home garden should not need artificial fertilizers or pesticides. The organic waste generated in your kitchen is more than enough for the plot of land you earmark for your garden. Before you begin planting, spend a while on enhancing soil fertility by spreading the mulch all over. Don’t go in for artificial growth boosters - your plants will get used to them.
- Designing a garden is half the fun. Show your designs to an expert, or go online and get a design suitable for your place. You can change the design around at the end of the season if you don’t like it.
- Don’t spend too much money on tools unnecessarily. As you go along, and your garden expands, you can get them as needed.
These are good home gardening tips to get you started. With time, you will build your own set of tips and share them with others! One final thing - remember that gardening is not a short term hobby. Stay in it for the long haul and you will find it very enriching!
