Let’s face it. We’ve all, at one time or another, faced this situation: you’ve just finished eating a big meal and you decide to be proactive and wash the dishes for your entire family. So, you head towards the sink and to your dismay, there’s a huge buildup of water, debris, and eating utensils. You’ve faced your worst nightmare of all time - a clogged sink! That’s where this post comes in.
Unclogging your sink is not rocket science - most of the cases that people experience can be resolved manually without the service of a professional plumber. So, without further ado, here are three feasible methods for unclogging your sink:
Boiling Hot Water
This is definitely the easiest method available. As stated before, most of the clogs that you face around the house can be fixed manually and they’re usually not that serious. For moderate clogs that are only slightly blocked by debris, pouring boiling hot water will allow the grease and any form of buildup to be permeated and eventually dissolved. The one important thing to keep in mind is whether your sink’s pipes are resistant to heat or not. If it is, it’s a good idea to skip this method and avoid any further damage.
Plunger
This is such a valuable tool to have around the house, since it has a good track record with resolving clogs of all kinds. To plunge properly, place the head of the plunger on the drain of your sink and plunge the drain about 12-20 times. Ensure that you don’t damage your sink or any vents around the sink (there have been cases where I’ve faced vent leaks) and pour boiling hot water down the sink once the plunging has been complete. This is to take out any greasy residue that is left behind after unclogging the sink.
Chemical Products
This should definitely be your last option. Chemical products are known to be really harmful to the environment even if their effectiveness with unclogging drains is good. From experience, the first two methods above work better since they’re really consistent - using the chemical products might bring out varying results from one clog to the next. However, use them if you need to!
So, on the whole, don’t immediately resort to a plumber when trying to unclog your drain, as there are many feasible options you can pick and choose from. If the case does arise where none of the options stated above work, then it’s in your best interests to contact a professional plumber and see what can be done!
