What’s Involved with Replacing a Garage Door?

September 21st, 2009

As technology has evolved, the average age, quality and feature set of garage doors have significantly improved. However, the older doors did not boast of the same quality as the newer ones, and chances are high that if you have an old garage door then sooner or later you shall need to get it replaced. Modern garage doors are more secure, have temperature and sound insulation properties inbuilt and need only a fraction of maintenance compared to the older garage doors, thanks to the improvement in quality.

The most popular material for garage doors used to be wood, but it has been gradually replaced by fiberglass and steel. The advantages of such material are twofold - they are much more durable compared to wooden material and they tolerate the weather much better, which means they won’t swell and shrink with changes in weather. Additionally, you get a wide choice of colors to select from, and hence can match and contrast the door with your favorite wall colors to a great extent.

Some people prefer to have natural light inside the garage. If you are one of them, then you may want to think of having doors that have high-strength plastic windows. The high-strength plastic would ensure security of your garage but would allow enough natural light to flow in from outside. You may want to insulate your garage from temperature and sound. That makes a lot of sense if your garage has an attached wall with your inner house, since it would ensure partial insulation of your house also. While getting the garage door, understand the material specification if this is on your wish-list. In general, this is something recommended.

Installing a garage door all by yourself is a difficult task, and can even be risky. These doors are too heavy and often too large for one person to handle. You may want to get a helping hand for easier handling and installation. In fact, if you are not experienced in this sort of stuff then it is better to leave the installation to professional hands, since the garage door might fall on some part of your body while performing the installation and cause your serious injury. The same applies for major maintenance activities, although you might still perform the smaller maintenance works by yourself. Still, if you indeed intend to do the installation and/or maintenances yourself then make sure that you use the best quality tools to minimize chances of any sort of mishap.
