Home Gardening Tips
Mon, 26th July 2010

Starting a home garden is the dream of every man and woman - when you think about it! We are so busy caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we rarely think of growing our own patch of nature at home. But each time we see someone doing that - either in real life or on the TV, we are overtaken by the urge to get a home garden up and running.

Depending on the amount of space we have at home - and no, not having space is not an excuse - we can choose whether we’d like to grow vegetables (and save money for the household), fruits, flowers, or other kinds of plants - ornamental, bonsai, herbs, rare plants, hybrids, etc. Then you can choose whether you’d like to grow them in the earth directly (suitable for places with favorable climate) or inside a greenhouse. While some kinds of gardens renew themselves year on year and require minimal maintenance, some others require back-breaking labor, but are well worth the effort.

Here are a few home gardening tips that can help you get the most out of the time you spend on this wonderful hobby -

  • Choose your plants well. Get expert advice on the type of soil and climatic conditions you have in your region and see which plants will thrive in those conditions. This will ensure maximum results with minimum efforts.
  • Wherever possible, try to grow your plants right from the seed phase. Bringing in germinated crops and transplanting into your garden might lead to the plant not being able to adjust to the change and wilting away. A plant that germinates in your home garden will always be stronger and will yield more.
  • A home garden should not need artificial fertilizers or pesticides. The organic waste generated in your kitchen is more than enough for the plot of land you earmark for your garden. Before you begin planting, spend a while on enhancing soil fertility by spreading the mulch all over. Don’t go in for artificial growth boosters - your plants will get used to them.
  • Designing a garden is half the fun. Show your designs to an expert, or go online and get a design suitable for your place. You can change the design around at the end of the season if you don’t like it.
  • Don’t spend too much money on tools unnecessarily. As you go along, and your garden expands, you can get them as needed.

These are good home gardening tips to get you started. With time, you will build your own set of tips and share them with others! One final thing - remember that gardening is not a short term hobby. Stay in it for the long haul and you will find it very enriching!

Plumbing

Let’s face it.  We’ve all, at one time or another, faced this situation: you’ve just finished eating a big meal and you decide to be proactive and wash the dishes for your entire family.  So, you head towards the sink and to your dismay, there’s a huge buildup of water, debris, and eating utensils.  You’ve faced your worst nightmare of all time - a clogged sink!  That’s where this post comes in.

Unclogging your sink is not rocket science - most of the cases that people experience can be resolved manually without the service of a professional plumber.  So, without further ado, here are three feasible methods for unclogging your sink:

Boiling Hot Water

This is definitely the easiest method available.  As stated before, most of the clogs that you face around the house can be fixed manually and they’re usually not that serious.  For moderate clogs that are only slightly blocked by debris, pouring boiling hot water will allow the grease and any form of buildup to be permeated and eventually dissolved.  The one important thing to keep in mind is whether your sink’s pipes are resistant to heat or not.  If it is, it’s a good idea to skip this method and avoid any further damage.

Plunger

This is such a valuable tool to have around the house, since it has a good track record with resolving clogs of all kinds.  To plunge properly, place the head of the plunger on the drain of your sink and plunge the drain about 12-20 times.  Ensure that you don’t damage your sink or any vents around the sink (there have been cases where I’ve faced vent leaks) and pour boiling hot water down the sink once the plunging has been complete.  This is to take out any greasy residue that is left behind after unclogging the sink.

Chemical Products

This should definitely be your last option.  Chemical products are known to be really harmful to the environment even if their effectiveness with unclogging drains is good.  From experience, the first two methods above work better since they’re really consistent - using the chemical products might bring out varying results from one clog to the next.  However, use them if you need to!

So, on the whole, don’t immediately resort to a plumber when trying to unclog your drain, as there are many feasible options you can pick and choose from.  If the case does arise where none of the options stated above work, then it’s in your best interests to contact a professional plumber and see what can be done!

Home Renovation Projects, Interior Design

Interior design remodeling can be a big undertaking especially for the novice. While each of us may have a rough idea of what we want to achieve with various design ideas actually going about it can be surprisingly complex. Planning is key when it comes to interior design.

A professional interior designer is often the best solution. The designers are skilled and well equipped with the proper tools of the trade. These designers understand what is needed and the best way to go about. Experienced and fashion savvy, many people choose to go with professionals rather than tackle this task on their own.

Whether you go with a professional or not, planning is still a central ingredient. Many people fail to properly plan their new layout. Grabbing a piece of notebook paper and scribbling out a crude layout in crayon just does not cut it. Planning to scale is needed complete with accurate measurements and placements of wall jacks and windows.

Making the floor plan takes a tape measure, paper, and diligence. Measure twice and then once again is a good piece of advice when drawing up the floor plan. As you draw up the plan make sure to accurately mark any doors, windows, electrical outlets, and phone jacks. While you may think you know where all these are you will do well to mark them out anyways. You never know what you might forget and you will thank yourself later when you catch yourself making a mistake. Luckily, a mistake on paper can be easily erased, placing the couch in front of the only outlet requires a certain amount of heavy lifting.

Now, one of the benefits to using a professional designer is that you will not have to worry about taking any measurements. However, if you are measuring on your own you might do well to have a second set of eyes to double check your work. You are, after all, only human.

A great tip is to photocopy the finished floor plan. With these extras you will be able to plan out several different ideas so you can fully grasp all of the possibilities available to you. Not only this but you will also be able to start over fresh if you make a mistake in the early steps of planning. This way you will not have to draw up the floor plan over and over again.

Once you create the floor plan you will be able to start on the actual designing part of the project. Professionals will come fully armed with ideas, pictures, and suggestions. Do It Yourselfers will have to rely on their own intuition for inspiration. Luckily, the internet is full of ideas complete with the most popular trends and styles.

Always keep your blueprint in mind as you look around for inspiration. This blueprint will show the limit of what you are capable of. You certainly do not want a couch that will spill over what you want to use as a walkway. By keeping the blueprint to accurate scale you should easily be able to determine the length, size, and even shape of the furniture and accents you want to include.

Planning, planning, planning is perhaps ninety percent of any remodeling job. A good floor plan is crucial in order to get an accurate gauge of what your room or office is capable of. Interior design remodeling is a great project to undertake just as long as you properly prepare.

Plumbing

If you have been experiencing various types of plumbing problems and you are unsure of how to repair it yourself, it may be time to consult with a plumber. However, how do you find good plumbers in your area? Here are some suggestions to make sure that you get the best work possible for a reasonable price.

There are many ways to find a plumber both online and offline. However, if you are looking for quality work, there are some other things to consider. You want to make sure that the plumber you are hiring is experienced and will offer you a reasonable price to fix your problem. One way to do this is to check to see if the individual has the proper credentials. Many plumbers will even list their certification numbers with their ads so that you know they are qualified.

In fact, one of the main reasons that people often have bad experiences with a plumber is because they do not do enough research. There is nothing wrong with checking credentials or making sure that your plumber has experience prior to allowing them to work in your house. It can actually save you a lot of time, money, and any future hassles from making a poor choice on your plumbing services.

Another way to find good plumbers is by asking for recommendations from your friends and family. If they have previously had any plumbing issues, they may be able to tell you which plumbers were able to fix the problem. You might also find out if there are any that you should avoid hiring. This can also be a good way to find out if there are any plumbing services in your area that have good prices.

It can also be a wise idea to check reviews on different plumbing services on the Better Business Bureau. If a plumber or their company has a large amount of complaints, then you know they are not worth your money or your time. Likewise, if there are many good reviews, you know that you are likely to receive trustworthy service if you decide to hire them.

You should begin to compile a list of plumbing services that you may be interested in. After you have done this, you should call each plumber individually to find out about their pricing and see what services that they offer. It can be a good idea to keep the prices written down to help you remember who offered which price. In addition to this, you should begin to compare prices to see where you will get the better deal.

If you live in a house or an apartment, there is another way that you can find a good plumber. Consider asking your landlord for a list of plumbers they usually use for any issues they have on their properties. This is also a good way to get a discount because you may receive a special price for being a tenant. In most cases, you will find a decent plumber via this option.

These are just a few ways that you can find good plumbers in your area. There are of course many other options that you can use to find out who is worth spending your money on for their services. As long as you remember to make your choice carefully and check their references, you should be able to find a plumber to fix your issues professionally and without worry.

Furniture

The days of scrummaging through old furniture at garage sales and antique shops are closing to an end. The biggest reason for this is the rise of the internet as more and more consumers turn online to find the best prices on both generic and unique furniture. As a result, many of these brick and mortar locations realize that they can barely compete with the prices that these online furniture shops charge because of their massive overhead, whereas an online furniture shop can keep these costs at a minimal and hence can offer great savings when compared to traditional retail prices.

Another great part about online furniture shops is the constant sales they have. Even more so than traditional retail locations, furniture shops are always trying to adapt and differentiate themselves by offering the best furniture sales online. They often announce any upcomming furniture sale far in advance and may even take advantage of online promotion through social media sites as well as reaching out to popular bloggers and forums as well just to get the awareness out. Comparingly, retail furniture shops spends thousands of dollars on mail-outs and flyers that are starting to become complacent with consumers, who are increasingly becomming more tech savvy and consumer confidence continues to grow when it comes to shopping online.

As with any other product, when you shop online you have an endless amount of options and can even get access to furniture shops around the world, so whether you want special beds from the UK, or custom rugs from India, you can actually connect with the supplier directly instead of hoping that one day these products will come to Canada. All in all, you really can get great deals online from furniture shops, and even better ones if you pay attention to when they are having their furniture sales.

When a family needs to decide upon a bed selection, there are really a lot of options that the average person would consider. Beds come in many different styles and sizes, with the most popular ranging in size from single to King. As for styles of beds, the most popular include divan beds, wooden beds, leather beds, and even sofa beds, storage beds and bunk beds.

The main difference between beds like divan beds, wooden beds and leather beds is the frame and headboard that the mattress rests on. The leather frame and headboard would be a big contrast to the wooden or divan, and it’s all a matter of price points and personal preferences.

As for storage, sofa and bunk beds, these are more unique styles of beds that really serve more than one main function, which is to be a comfortable bed. Storage beds are great because they allow for additional storage underneath the mattress, where sofa beds are really a sofa that has a pull out bed underneath the cushions built into the sofa. So by day it’s a comfortable sofa in the living room and by night it turns into another bedroom in case the guests need a place to sleep for the night. Bunk beds are really fun for young children and siblings and can be great for parents who are looking to save some room with a growing and young family as they try and juggle all their debts and bills.

Beds

Getting a proper night’s rest after all that exhausting home renovation work is essential for those that need to get right back at it the next day and every day after that. By investing in a memory foam mattress, you are making an investment in your health so that you can live a more active, energetic and stress free lifestyle. Also, the memory foam mattresses are much more advanced in adjusting to different body styles and sizes, as the foam contours and moulds to your specific body size. Another benefit of these high end type of mattresses is that they actually have some heat retention properties as well to help our with those sore and aching muscles and helps alleviate the built up tension in one’s body.

Always respect the importance of having a good night’s rest as it affects your energy levels and attitude on a day to day basis. So to ensure maximum productivity, efficiency and overall enjoyment you should definitely consider investing in a memory foam mattress.

Bathrooms, Kitchens, Plumbing

Are you tired of those incessantly leaking kitchens that simply do nothing more than ruin the look of your entire kitchen? Well, it is time to take care of it. The worst is when you have a rusted sink showing off from your sparkling counter tops. It is time to replace the sink with a new one. The first thing one needs to do is get equipped with a tool box containing all the essential tools ranging from; a hammer, assorted wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers to putty knives. Since the make, style and fittings of the sink vary from one manufacturer to another, one might need additional tools accordingly as well.

The foremost thing before replacing the old sink is, selecting a new piece of sink that goes well with your kitchen theme and complements the countertop. Additionally since one has to install the sink in the old place its dimensions should be very close to the size of the old sink being replaced. When buying a sink, ensure that you also invest in buying related accessories like, faucets to give that complete look to the sink, which looks stale when old and crusty faucets are attached to the new sinks.

To proceed with the replacement of the sink, make sure that you have turned off the water supply to both the hot and cold lines and relieve any pressure by turning the knobs of the faucets. In the next go, disconnect any lines connected with the sink or related accessories, by making use of the appropriate wrenches. Make sure that the drain pipe, dish washer line and garbage disposals are also removed from the sink. Run a finger under the sink to pinpoint any brackets that might have been used to hold the sink in place. It is not essential that all sinks are held with brackets, which are only required for certain styles of sinks.

Make use of the hammer and the putty knife to tap the underside of the sink to detach it from the countertop and the sealant, to remove it from the countertop. Use the putty knife to scrape away any sealant from the countertop without damaging the surface area. Be gentle and careful when scarping from the countertop.

When replacing the old one with the new, try to get an idea of the sink dimension by gently placing it into the cut-out of the old sink. If the sink seems to be larger than the area and your countertop is made of Formica, use mask tape across the areas which will be required to cut off. Use a jig saw for this purpose, as it helps preventing the surfaces from scarring and cracking.

Coat the cutout area from the inside with any waterproof sealant like clear silicone and set the new sink in place. Complete the installation of the sink by using the retainer clips and screws that the sink has been packaged with, using the appropriate tools from your tool box. Next, install the faucets, on the sink according to their installation guidelines and later attach the disconnected lines to the sink and the accessories. Also, allow water supply to the sink and the faucet to check out for any leakages which can be taken care of accordingly. Following these simple instructions and one can replace their faulty sinks at home with ease.

Basements, Home Renovation Ideas, Plumbing

One who has had a basement leak knows how frustrating it can be. Fortunately, there are steps one can do to prevent basement leaks. These steps will go a long way in keeping your basement dry as well as prevent an enormous repair bill.

1. If you currently have a leak in the basement, you need to find the source of the leak. Tape some plastic wrap securely to the dark spot on the cement. If the wetness is outside the plastic, this means the moisture is coming from inside the basement. If the moisture is on the inside of the plastic, you may have gutter or grading trouble.

2. Gutters are the most common reason for water seeping into the foundation. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and other debris. The water should be able to flow unobstructed. You should also check the path of the gutters. The water should be flowing away from the foundation of the house. Try adding an extension gutter that stretches out far from the house. As well, keep vegetation from growing next to the foundation as it will hold water which will eventually leak into the ground and into the basement.

3. If you have a crack in the foundation such as walls or the floor, you need to have it sealed. Hydraulic cement or concrete patching compound is recommended by many experts. These products must be applied when the area with the leak has been dry for a certain period. After applying the compound, you can add a waterproofing substance that can be sanded.

4. When repairing a hairline crack, use a hammer and a chisel to open up the area. Chip a 1/2″ groove and clear out any debris. Mix and apply the cement by filling the groove. Trowel it before it cures. Make sure you have completely filled the groove. Cover with a patching compound and then apply a waterproofing material. Make sure there is no debris during the entire repair process.  Serious damage to a foundation will require the services of a professional. It is important to get several estimates before hiring a contractor.

No matter what the cause of moisture in a basement, it is important to take the appropriate repair and preventive measures to ensure you have a long lasting foundation. It will greatly reduce the chances of having to pay an expensive repair bill.

Garages, Home Improvement Projects, Home Renovation Projects

As technology has evolved, the average age, quality and feature set of garage doors have significantly improved. However, the older doors did not boast of the same quality as the newer ones, and chances are high that if you have an old garage door then sooner or later you shall need to get it replaced. Modern garage doors are more secure, have temperature and sound insulation properties inbuilt and need only a fraction of maintenance compared to the older garage doors, thanks to the improvement in quality.

The most popular material for garage doors used to be wood, but it has been gradually replaced by fiberglass and steel. The advantages of such material are twofold - they are much more durable compared to wooden material and they tolerate the weather much better, which means they won’t swell and shrink with changes in weather. Additionally, you get a wide choice of colors to select from, and hence can match and contrast the door with your favorite wall colors to a great extent.

Some people prefer to have natural light inside the garage. If you are one of them, then you may want to think of having doors that have high-strength plastic windows. The high-strength plastic would ensure security of your garage but would allow enough natural light to flow in from outside. You may want to insulate your garage from temperature and sound. That makes a lot of sense if your garage has an attached wall with your inner house, since it would ensure partial insulation of your house also. While getting the garage door, understand the material specification if this is on your wish-list. In general, this is something recommended.

Installing a garage door all by yourself is a difficult task, and can even be risky. These doors are too heavy and often too large for one person to handle. You may want to get a helping hand for easier handling and installation. In fact, if you are not experienced in this sort of stuff then it is better to leave the installation to professional hands, since the garage door might fall on some part of your body while performing the installation and cause your serious injury. The same applies for major maintenance activities, although you might still perform the smaller maintenance works by yourself. Still, if you indeed intend to do the installation and/or maintenances yourself then make sure that you use the best quality tools to minimize chances of any sort of mishap.
